U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Enhances Healthcare Coverage for CHAMPVA Families

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will soon expand medical coverage for Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA) beneficiaries, including family members and primary family caregivers of Veterans, to include audio-only telehealth, extended mental health care, and contraceptive services.

Specifically, this means:

• Access to audio-only telehealth: Beneficiaries gain expanded access to care, especially beneficial for rural recipients, with coverage retroactive from May 12, 2020, until Nov. 26, 2024, for reimbursement claims.
• Elimination of caps on mental health and substance use visits: There will no longer be limitations on the number of visits, and pre-authorizations for outpatient mental health visits exceeding 23 visits per year or more than two sessions per week are no longer required.
• Elimination of deductibles and cost sharing for contraceptive services: Deductibles and cost sharing for FDA-approved contraceptive services or products are waived.
