An executive order was released last week that undocumented immigrants married to U.S. citizens, including their children, may remain in the U.S. while applying for permanent residence. Prior to this change, undocumented spouses were required to return to their home country to complete the application. HCAOA supports immigration reform to address the workforce shortage in the home care industry. This new policy could allow this demographic to enter the workforce at an expedited pace, providing an additional source for new employees.

Thank you to the more than 100 HCAOA members who traveled to Washington, D.C. last week to advocate for home care during the 2024 HCAOA National Home Care Advocacy Day! Over 100 meetings were held with members of Congress, personal connections were made, and existing ones strengthened allowing doors to be opened on important issues impacting home care.
The temporary exemption for I-9 verification during the COVID-19 pandemic implemented by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) expired on March 20, 2020, and all employees who had been remotely verified during that period must complete a physical inspection by August 30, 2023. Certain employers may now have an alternate virtual option for complying with the requirements. Sweeping changes for private employers with 25+ employees fell into place when Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law a new immigration bill (SB 1718) on May 10, 2023.
