Last week, the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging held a full, joint committee hearing entitled “Heroes at Home: Improving Services for Veterans and their Caregivers.” This was the first joint session of the Committee in over a decade, and the urgent need for improved support systems, legislative action, and accessible resources for veterans and their caregivers were top of mind for the participating legislators. The hearing also touched on H.R.8371, the Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act. This bill has been an HCAOA priority for some time and would enable more veterans to remain in their homes as they age. Senators emphasized the importance of removing the cap on non-institutional care and providing comprehensive support to caregivers. Notably, Senators Jerry Moran (R-KS) and Jon Tester (D-MT) demonstrated strong engagement with the Act's provisions, underscoring the need for stable and consistent support for veterans who wish to remain in their homes as they age and receive care. Their questions also highlighted the importance of removing caps on non-institutional care.
HCAOA will continue to work with the U.S. House and Senate to ensure they understand how important removing the cap on non-institutional care is to our nation’s veterans. Click here to watch the hearing.
