According to Jennifer Battista, HCAOA COO, state chapters are important when developing advocacy efforts in the state as well as providing relevant educational programming. “Our members want to have a unified voice when discussing such issues as raising Medicaid rates or enhancing licensure regulations,” said Battista. “We’re excited to have the opportunity to establish a chapter in West Virginia to advance our advocacy efforts for better Medicaid rates.” Register for the one-hour webinar here. California’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) has approved the third readoption of its COVID-19 Emergency Temporary Standard.
The revised ETS will become effective when the Office of Administrative Law completes its review and files it with the Secretary of State, which is anticipated to occur this week and will remain in effect through December 31, 2022. Learn More AARP Michigan is urging lawmakers to shift to home and community-based care services for the aging population instead of nursing homes and institutions. They have made their concerns known to lawmakers developing Michigan’s fiscal budget for 2022-23. A survey they commissioned in August 2022 found that 89 percent of residents in Michigan would prefer to age at home and avoid ever living in a nursing home. AARP Michigan supports increased funding for the state’s PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly), which provides social and medica services in adult health centers but it supplemented by in-home care. Listen here. A report from the inspector general’s office of the Department of Health and Human Services uncovered delayed access or denials to seniors who should qualify for Medicare Advantage. According to the office, annual audits have found “widespread and persistent problems related to inappropriate denials of services and payment.”
Prior authorization cases that were turned down were often because of lack of documentation or not following protocol to be approved (such as getting an X-ray before an MRI). Human error played a part in denied payment issues for a simple processing error. The office made recommendations to CMS, which oversees Medicare Advantage, to issue new guidance for the insurers and take additional steps to review system errors. Read the article. This week HCAOA sent a letter to the offices of U.S. Representatives Fred Upton (R-MI) and Diana Degette (D-CO) in support of CURES 2.0 (H.R.6000). Section 201 of this bill would authorize $25 million per year for caregiver training under the Public Health Service Act. This funding would help alleviate the workforce shortage that persists in the home care industry. HCAOA expressed to Congress that federal funding is necessary to support and sustain the caregiver workforce that so many of our nation’s seniors and individuals with disabilities rely on.
