AARP Report on Family Caregivers Details Statistics, Issues, Promising Policies

​Last week, AARP released their “Valuing the Invaluable 2023 Update: Strengthening Supports for Family Caregivers,” providing a profile of family caregivers, the challenges they face, recent developments that support family caregivers, and recommendations.

Some key findings shared in the report include:

• By 2034, adults 65 and older will outnumber children under the age of 18.
• In 2019, roughly 30 percent of family caregivers of older Americans lived in a household that also included children or grandchildren.
• Gen Z and Millennial caregivers are more likely than other caregivers to be working while performing their caregiving responsibilities.
• 61 percent of family caregivers work either full or part time.
• Diverse populations have distinct care needs and challenges.
• Direct care workforce shortages have resulted in more hours of care and higher-intensity care by family caregivers.
• Recruitment and retention are issues with an average caregiver turnover rate of 40-60 percent each year.
• Only 11 states and Washington D.C. have paid family leave programs.
• 45 states and territories now have CARE Act laws, which support family caregivers when their relatives go into the hospital and as they transition home.
