Keynote speaker Matt Thornhill will share insight into the future of home care during his session at the Annual Leadership Conference Sept. 18-19 in Orlando, FL.
Over the next ten years the number of adults in the U.S. ages 75 and older will grow from 23 million to over 34 million – a 48% increase thanks to older Boomers. What are the key steps to take now to be positioned to prosper tomorrow? During his keynote, you’ll get insights and specific action steps from Matt Thornhill in this engaging and provocative keynote address. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of how Boomers will transform life’s fourth quarter and how your organization can capitalize. Matt Thornhill, Visionary Futurist Matt Thornhill is a visionary futurist and national expert on today’s older Boomer consumers. For almost 20 years Matt has been sounding the clarion call that the future of senior living and home care will be shaped by America’s first dominant generational cohort, Baby Boomers. His insights and perspectives have been featured on NBC Nightly News, CBS Evening News, CNBC, MSNBC, PBS, NPR, and in The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times, not to mention countless podcasts and blog posts. Two St. Louis television stations chose HCAOA Member and Veterans Home Care founder Bonnie Laiderman as one of four local honorees from over 180 nominations for its Remarkable Women award, an initiative to celebrate local inspiring leaders. In 2003, Laiderman started Veterans Home Care, a family home care business to help veterans or surviving spouses of veterans find home care with no out-of-pocket expenses by helping them apply for VA aid to pay for in-home assistance. The organization has helped more than 20,000 veterans and their spouses. Laiderman also launched SmartCompanion Care LLC, which provides smart home technology for seniors through Alexa. The company installs and sets up the service and customizes it to provide 24-7 security. She plans to add calls to the service, adding “It’s terribly sad that the elderly people are alone, and days can go by, and they never talk to anybody.” Read more about Laiderman here. CMS announced it will offer more than $110 million to expand access to home and community-based services (HCBS) through Medicaid’s Money Follows the Person (MFP) program. The new Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) makes individual awards of up to $5 million available for more than 20 states and territories not currently participating in MFP. These funds will support initial planning and implementation to get the state/territory programs off the ground, which would ensure more people with Medicaid can receive high-quality, cost-effective, person-centered services in a setting they choose. For states already participating in MFP, CMS also announced that the agency is increasing the reimbursement rate for MFP “supplemental services.” These services will now be 100% federally funded with no state share.
HCAOA supports this program, which has helped thousands of older adults seamlessly transition from a nursing home or institution back into their own homes. In 2020, more than 10 state chapters penned letters to their state Medicaid Directors in support of the program. Join four industry CEOs, including HCAOA’s Vicki Hoak, on Wednesday, April 13 at Noon CT for a roundtable to answer home care’s toughest questions, such as how to bring more people to work in the industry and the biggest threats and opportunities for the industry.
