Paula worked with a client who had quadriplegia for 30 years and had high expectations - not every caregiver who went out to his home was invited to come back! One of the most important jobs for his caregiver was navigating his TV remote. When Paula first started with this client, it was somewhat rocky since she was a little older and did not consider herself tech savvy. However, when she figured out the remote, it was the beginning of a meaningful and impactful relationship. Over the years, quadriplegia took a toll on the client's body and he was in the hospital frequently. Paula was preparing to see the client when he was discharged from the hospital, and instead she got a call that he was having trouble breathing. In his final moments, he asked Paula to hold his hand while he talked about dying and being afraid. She sat by his bedside held his hand, listened, and reminded him that it was his choice. He passed away peacefully.
