The President’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities (PCPID) has released a report emphasizing the urgent need for an employment pipeline of direct support professionals (DSPs) to provide essential home care services for individuals with disabilities. Highlighting the significant demand for DSPs in the U.S., the report notes that recruitment, training, and support for these roles must undergo substantial changes to meet the growing needs of Americans with disabilities. With the number of individuals relying on home- and community-based services (HCBS) projected to rise sharply, the current average vacancy rate in HCBS organizations is more than 20%. To address these challenges, PCPID recommends several actions for lawmakers and government agencies, including the establishment of a Standard Occupational Classification code for DSPs to facilitate data collection and inform policy improvements. The committee advocates for reviewing compensation rates through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, expanding training opportunities, and increasing marketing efforts to attract potential DSPs. Currently, Congress is considering the Recognizing the Role of Direct Support Professionals Act (H.R.2941), which would help standardize DSP roles and ultimately enhance the workforce supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
