September is Healthy Aging Month, and Sept. 22 marks Falls Prevention Awareness Day, both timely reminders that helping older Americans remain safe, healthy and independent often starts at home. For millions of Americans, remaining at home is possible because of a combination of support from family caregivers and professional home care providers. Home care professionals assist with the everyday activities that make independence possible, including bathing, dressing, mobility, meal preparation, transportation and other essential daily needs.
Research continues to demonstrate the value of home- and community-based services (HCBS). A 2026 research brief [link/citation needed] found that access to HCBS is associated with improved health outcomes, including fewer emergency department visits and hospitalizations. Unmet needs for these services are also associated with worse health and community-living outcomes. Professional home care is an important part of this broader system of support, often working alongside family caregivers to help individuals remain safely in their homes. Family caregivers provide hands-on assistance, coordinate care, manage appointments and fill gaps in care, often while balancing jobs, raising families and other responsibilities, and that support can come at a significant financial cost. The Credit for Caring Act (S.925/H.R.2036) would provide meaningful financial relief to eligible working family caregivers for qualified caregiving expenses, helping families sustain the care and support their loved ones need. Supporting family caregivers strengthens the entire home-based care system. When families have the resources they need to continue providing care and accessing additional support, more Americans can remain independent and connected to their communities. During Healthy Aging Month, HCAOA is asking members to tell their members of Congress to cosponsor the Credit for Caring Act, or thank them if they are already supporting this legislation.
