Report Finds Caregivers of Our Nations Veterans Need More Support

The “America’s Military and Veteran Caregivers: Hidden Heros Emerging From the Shadows” report includes data from the 2023 RAND Caregiving Survey, which included 2,946 respondents (513 military and veteran caregivers, 1,205 civilian caregivers, and 1,228 non-caregivers), and the 2022 RAND Veterans Survey of 1,100 U.S. veterans. There are approximately 14.3 million military and veteran caregivers in the U.S., making up 5.5 percent of the adult population. The estimated economic value of military and veteran caregiving ranges from $119 billion to $485 billion annually, with military/veteran caregivers facing average out-of-pocket costs of $8,583 and forgoing about $4,522 in annual household income.

Support for Veterans and VA Employees: Grants Available for Disaster Relief

The Department of Veterans Affairs has teamed up with the PenFed Foundation to provide vital support for VA employees and Veterans impacted by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Declared Disasters. Eligible individuals can apply for a $500 grant aimed at helping with home repairs or covering hardship expenses incurred due to damage to their primary residence.

The Pennsylvania Office of Long-Term Living (OLTL) is re-opening the Calendar Year 2023 Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) rate study survey to allow additional responses from providers who were unable to participate earlier. This includes personal assistance agencies (PAS).

Administration for Community Living Releases Progress Report on National Strategy to Support Family Caregivers

The Administration for Community Living (ACL) submitted a progress report to Congress on the implementation of the 2022 National Strategy to Support Family Caregivers. This strategy outlines a vision, sets goals, and offers recommendations to ensure family caregivers receive the necessary support and resources. Nearly all the federal actions committed to in 2022 were complete or are in progress. Since the strategy's release, federal agencies have also committed to 40 additional actions. The strategy will be updated every two years, as required by the Recognize, Assist, Include, Support, and Engage (RAISE) Family Caregivers Act of 2017.

Governor Ned Lamont last month announced that beginning Jan. 1, 2025, Connecticut’s minimum wage will increase from the current rate of $15.69 per hour to $16.35 per hour.
