On June 12, 2025, Mayor Ed Gainey signed into law an amendment to the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s Paid Sick Days Act (PSDA) that changes the accrual requirements and amount of paid sick leave that must be provided under the Act. Effective January 1, 2026, employers in Pittsburgh, regardless of size, must allow covered employees to accrue one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked in the city instead of 35 hours. Washington State enacted significant amendments to the WA Cares Fund (“WA Cares”), the nation’s first mandatory, publicly funded long-term care insurance program for workers. WA Cares was established under the Long-Term Services and Supports Trust Act, signed into law in April 2021.

Did you know that when you join HCAOA you are automatically a member of your state chapter, as well? All members are encouraged to get involved with their HCAOA state chapters! The easiest way to get involved is to visit your state chapter website and to attend a state chapter event. The summer is heating up and many chapters have events and conferences planned! These events include full agendas of presentations, opportunities to meet and talk with vendors supporting the home care industry, and time for networking and information-sharing with colleagues.

Caregiving, a documentary created with executive producer Bradley Cooper highlighting the challenges and triumphs of caregiving in America, will premiere on June 24 on PBS and on the PBS YouTube Channel. Caregiving is now available to stream on PBS.org and the PBS app. Award-winning actress Uzo Aduba serves as the film’s narrator, bringing her own experience as a caregiver for her mother to the project. A new report by Aging and Health Technology Watch, an organization that provides market research, trends and analysis about the home-based care sector, shows that artificial intelligence is poised to help home care solve staffing shortages, maintain a well-trained workforce and retain workers. AI technology is playing a role in care oversight and enabling the creating of hybrid care models – an increasingly likely combination of in-person care supplemented with AI.
The HCAOA Kentucky Chapter is seeking feedback about one of the biggest challenges impacting providers’ ability to meet the demand for in-home care: significant delays in the licensure/re-licensure process, as well as considerable barriers to participating in Medicaid home and community-based services programs.
