Phil Bongiorno

Executive Director 

Phil joined the HCAOA in January of 2014 as the new Executive Director. He serves as the chief staff executive for  the HCAOA responsible for the association’s overall operations. In his 20 year career in association management, Phil has represented a number of associations with a concentration on health and disability issues. Phil most recently served as the Director of Government Relations for The Society of Thoracic Surgeons. In his spare time,  Phil is a marathon runner and has completed the Marine Corps Marathon 14 times.



Laura Smothers

Director of Membership

Laura joined the HCAOA in March of 2016 as the Director of Membership. She is responsible for supervising  membership operations including membership recruitment and retention efforts.  She also helps develop, coordinate,  and implement initiatives that attract new members, retain current members, enhance member benefits, and foster  member engagement.  With a master’s degree in nonprofit management, Laura has worked in the nonprofit field for  the past eight years with a focus on healthcare and membership. She most recently served as the Manager of  Operations for Membership & Development at the Council on Foundations.  In her free time, Laura loves to travel,  sing, visit museums, hike, read, and spend time with her fiancé and rescue cat and dog.



Andrea Liford-Martinez

Manager, Meetings & Education

Joining the HCAOA in June of 2012, Andrea serves as the Programs and Events Coordinator. Andrea is responsible  for managing the Annual Leadership Conference as well as the HCAOA Education Program.  During her career as an  event planner, Andrea has had the privilege of serving a variety of nonprofit organizations while working for  SmithBucklin Corporation in Chicago, IL. In addition, she has also had the opportunity to serve organizations such  as Eli Lilly and the NCAA. In her free time, she enjoys the outdoors, baking and spending time with her family.




Nataly Schwartz

Manager Chapter Services

Nataly joined HCAOA in July of 2016 as the Manager of Chapter Services. She serves as the primary liaison to HCAOA state chapters. Nataly oversees all business functions of the chapters including chapter operations, financial management, membership development and advocacy. Nataly has a master’s degree in nonprofit and association management and an MBA. She has worked in both the nonprofit and for profit sectors focusing on committee and chapter management. Most recently, Nataly was the Director Consultant for the DC chapters of Business Networking International. In her spare time Nataly likes to travel, read and spend time with her rescue dog Lucky.


Michelle Hannon 

Coordinator, Administrative Services

Joining the HCAOA in July 2014, Michelle serves as the Coordinator, Administrative Services. Michelle is  responsible for a wide variety of administrative and staff support services to our departmental programs and special  projects. Before joining HCAOA, Michelle served as the Office Manager for the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network  and prior to that she worked for the North East Regional Board of Dental Examiners, Inc. In her free time she enjoys  going to the dog park.
